Legend and Reverence of the Virgin Mary
The iconic image of Panagia Eleousa of Kykkos housed in the Kykkos Monastery of Cyprus depicts the Virgin Mary. This image is famed and revered throughout the Orthodox world and attributed to the Apostle Luke.
- Painted seven years after the Crucifixion and Resurrection of Jesus Christ
- Transferred by the Apostle himself to Egypt after the Death of the Virgin Mary
- Rescued from pirates and taken to Constantinople
- Presented to Emperor Alexios Komninos (1081-1118)
- Sent to Cyprus by Duke Manuel Voutomytis, under miraculous circumstances
Miraculous History of the Icon
The legend behind the icon is steeped in miracles and divine interventions. The image, once hidden in a cave by a monk named Isaiah, led to miraculous healings that prompted its journey to Cyprus. When the emperor's daughter was struck with a sudden illness, the icon was handed over along with funds to build a church in Cyprus.
The icon's arrival to Cyprus was marked by an extraordinary welcome, with all the trees kneeling down. The church built by monk Isaiah using the emperor’s funds is still called the "Royal and Stavropygian Monastery" today.
